E is for Eric, Eric Draven
Eric Draven was a fictional character and the main lead from the comic, The Crow by O'Barr. He was personify later by Brandon Lee in The Crow movie in the 1994. The Crow was the finest and sad to say the last work of Chinese KungFu legend only son, Brandon Lee.
I can't put my finger if it is Brandon or the character Eric Draven himself as I became an instant fan of the movie and comic. Eric had a good life being a rock musician and a lovely girlfriend, Shelly. They were having a good life minding their own business until both being assaulted by a street gang.
"People once believed that when someone dies, a Crow carries their soul to the land of the dead, but sometimes something so bad happens that a terrible sadness is carried with it and the soul can't rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, the Crow can bring the soul back and put the wrong things right "
Eric couldn't have his peace in death and the crow guide him back to take his revenge on the killers and the rapists. Once return from the grave, he felt too painful to be himself and mask himself with the best way he know how.
In both the comic and movie, resurrected Eric often induce pain on himself in order to ease the emotional pain he was having. One of the way was cutting himself. Some of his cut was so deep that he uses duct tape to bind his wounds. Yes he does crazy thing as he was not sane.
Although he can have wounds, he is virtually indestructible as long his crow is with him.
He didn't actually plan how and where he seek his vengeance but the crow will guide him. You can say in a way "Happy-go-lucky"? Not I think he is not happy in this case.
Due to the fact he was a musician in life, there were times where he will be with his electric guitar. It's pretty cool if you ask me.
In the movie, one of the iconic scene was he was jamming the guitar on the roof top.
It was a emotion heavy rock... not Emo rock
With every murderer he killed, Eric will take one pieces of the victim's belonging with him as a token.
Eric was a different type of "Heroism" not for the better good but self justice. It kinda mark a new era of hero in movie if you asked me in the 1990s. That maybe the reason why it was so successful in a movie.
Last but not least, all these only can make possible with the performance of Brandon Lee himself. There are many speculation regarding Brandon's death, be it's his father curse, the crow curse and what not. Whatever it is, Brandon Lee is deeply missed and had done a good job in personify the character of Eric Draven, the original Crow character.
Are you a fan of the comic and movie too?
PS: The above toy is the crow produce by mcfarlane.
